Email: [email protected] The response of the international media to the possible health effects of the radiation leaks that occurred at Fukushima, Japan, following the massive earthquake and Tsunami have shown that we have still not learned suffi ciently from the Chernobyl accident. There is still a public perception that any amount of radiation is likely to cause cancer in a substantial fraction of the population. Annual doses from natural radiation vary widely around the world. To have evolved as a successful species, we must be superbly adapted to protecting ourselves from the effects of natural radiation. The problem that we have as scientists is that we rarely expose large populations to increased levels of radiation, so have little evidence to determine risk from exposure above the norm. How much have we learned in terms of risk to human health from the 2 largest exposures of populations to man-made radiation – the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident in 1986?

Recent Fukushima nuclear detonation, Chernobyl nuclear fallout, three mile island nuclear accident and atomic bomb explosion – rethinking the effects of nuclear radiations over human health
Background: The earlier Atomic Bomb explosion in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and three worth mentioning nuclear accidents - detonation at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Chernobyl nuclear fallout and an accident at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant have made us more worried about the secure exploitation of nuclear energy. The central focus of this paper is to review radiation-mediated health e...
متن کاملLessons From Zika Policies to Improve Gender Equity
Gender equity is easily supported in theory but harder to pursue in practice. In this article, the case of Zika travel policies is used to illustrate some glaring gaps related to gender, for both men and women, at both international and national levels. Zika travel policies have not considered new evidence on biological or social determinants of health, putting babies at risk of exposure. The a...
متن کاملPotential Exposures and Lessons Learned from Industrial Radiological Accidents
Ionizing radiation is used in many industrial practices such as industrial radiography, nuclear gauges, petroleum well logging and industrial irradiators. These practices can result in radiation exposures whose intensity can be foreseen with some level of certainty. They are called normal exposures. Nevertheless, in routine practices other type of exposures can also occur. They are called poten...
متن کاملAre passive smoking, air pollution and obesity a greater mortality risk than major radiation incidents?
BACKGROUND Following a nuclear incident, the communication and perception of radiation risk becomes a (perhaps the) major public health issue. In response to such incidents it is therefore crucial to communicate radiation health risks in the context of other more common environmental and lifestyle risk factors. This study compares the risk of mortality from past radiation exposures (to people w...

Copyright © 2011 Massachusetts Medical Society. On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Japan. The total number of people who died in the earthquake and the tsunami that it generated is still being assessed, but the official estimation already exceeds 14,000.1 The natural disaster also caused substantial damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the con...
